I feel that if you're honest with yourself and you truly make music and merch that you like, and that you would buy, and really think about who you are as a person and not how you want people to think you are, that you'll end up naturally attracting fans that will dig your stuff. Just don't worry about who your fans are and worry about who you are, and then do what you would do. Then you'll have fans that will do what you would do. What could be better than that?

I think Joseph makes an interesting about not wanting to put a fence around your talent. But, I do think there is also a need to establish who you are attracting. There are simply too many people out there to just market yourself to everyone and expect your 'fanbase' to grow. While I like the concept of the method, there is far too little time to market in places where you will see nothing in return. There is a reason why marketers create an audience, its because its gives you something to target. Without a target, you will be wasting time trying to attract people who find zero interest in what you are doing. Think less about putting a fence around your talent, and see it as putting a fence around your fans. You want to put them all together to rope them in.

Really ,there is "NO" fanbase..think about it!..music/songs/talent touches everyone somehow everywhere !..they called it crossover, but technology now goes way past any lines and boundries!..if the marketing people say fanbase they are putting a fence around your talent. I'm sure you'd like every one on this planet to hear and see your talent and work!..just keep getting yourself out there. everywhere....Joseph Nicoletti consulting
